Relentless refinement has been a Honda Accord hallmark since its debut more than 20 years ago, and this latest version is no exception. But the new-for-1998 model has finally achieved large sedan status with a substantially roomier back seat.It is coupled to a four-speed automatic whose shifts are utterly fluid. The fuel-efficient VTEC four-cylinder powerplant is also an overachiever, one of which develops 148 hp while meeting the strict Ultra Low-Emission Vehicle standards. The new Accords combine this roominess and driveline excellence with a supple suspension, velvety controls, and exterior styling that is innocuous but tasteful. Inside, however, these Accords are both stylistically and ergonomically satisfying. Despite all these improvements, the prices for the 1998 models have shrunk slightly. Such highvalue excellence is a fine formula for continuing mainstream-sedan success.
